Maintenance For Your Garage Door & Opener
-
The Drop Test
While the garage door is closed, pull the red emergency release rope to disengage the
emergency release lever. This will detach the door from the operator rail. Manually lift the door halfway,
and then “drop” the door. How did the door react? Did it fall slowly? Did it slam shut? Did it stay in the
same position? Take note of the result, and then perform the process again from the fully-open position.
Take note of what happens once again.
This is testing the door’s balance. Garage doors are heavy, and if your door isn’t holding its position at
the halfway point or at the top, the spring may need adjustment or replacement. Garage doors are an
important part to the safety of your home and your vehicles, so you need trusted parts that will last a
long time.
-
Tune Up The door
Garage doors usually move up and down multiple times per day, and that can add up over
time. This repeated use causes hardware to get loose. You should perform a garage door inspection at
least twice per year to make sure all of the nuts and bolts are tight to the hinges, tracks, and brackets.
The nuts and bolts may be in different sizes, so be sure to use the proper tools when performing this
garage door service.
-
Lubricate
Lubricating the door will allow the moving parts to keep moving with the same consistency. It
will free rollers, hinges, and bearings from seizing during harsher weather, and will also rid those parts
of dirt and grime. Lubrication will also prevent the shrill (and loud) squeaks and squeals that no one likes
to hear. Aeonic Garage Doors recommends Clopay Synthetic Pro Lube, which can be purchased in the
garage door section of most hardware stores.
-
Check the Operator & Reverse Functions
After completing the other steps mentioned above, reattach the
carrier to the operator rail trolley. Run the garage door to the open position, and place an item like a
wooden two-by-four on the garage floor where the door will close. When you run the door to the closed
position, the should close on the board and reverse on impact. This is an important safety feature, so it’s
crucial that it reverses on impact. If it continues to try and push through the board, an adjustment is
needed.
-
Safety Sensors
Your safety sensors should be 6 inches or less from your garage floor, and nothing
should be blocking their line of sight. Typically, there are indicator lights in two different colors – and
those will commonly be green and red, or green and amber/orange. Both should glow solid in color.
Attempt to close the door, and while it’s closing, impede the sensors. The door should automatically
reverse. Keep these sensors clean, as even spider webs can interfere with them functioning properly.
This is the cause of our most common complaint, so check the sensor lights first. If one is solid and the
other is flickering or out, the sensors likely need an adjustment. If both are out, call the trusted garage
door technicians with Aeonic.
Rollers
We’ve all heard the Garage that sounds like a train is coming. The Click-Clack…Click-Clack… of every section as it makes its way around the track overhead. Maybe it sounds like a scrape and scratch or a faint rattle that’s just annoying enough to know… that’s not right… Rollers are an important part of the door, and how it operates. They can not only make the door run noisily but can leave the door racked or cause a situation where the door is completely left hanging above if not given the proper attention. Currently there are four types of rollers being installed. The fifth one listed on our page is the latest and greatest. The rollers is soo great that not only is it our roller of choice but it comes with a manufacturer backed lifetime warranty.

Rollers
Your garage door shouldn’t sound like a train is coming from inside of it. That telltale “click-clack, click-
clack” sound is the rollers moving inconsistently through the track overhead. Rollers have to work
together, so any sound – clicking, scraping or scratching – emerging from the rollers can signal that
something is out of line. When rollers aren’t working properly, your garage door becomes racked or
hanging from above. There are different types of rollers, but Aeonic Garage Doors uses only the best
products that are backed by a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty – to ensure they last the test of time.

Drums & Cables
Cables and Cable Drums are Essential to the door’s operation. The door begins and ends with these in a uniform movement. It is important to have these inspected during a service as these two parts together pull the door from the ground on up. It is not common knowledge to inspect the cables or drums, so it is important to note the garage is sitting crooked, struggling or are hearing a scraping noise similar to a light scratching on a chalk board as the door goes up or down. If these issues are present, it is strongly recommended that your Aeonic professional technician is called to evaluate and fix the issue.

Drums & Cables
Your garage door opening and closing begins with your drums and cables. These components work in
unison to make sure the door opens and closes with uniform movement. Because of their reliance on
each other, it’s vital to have these components inspected with any routine inspection. The position of
your garage door can indicate potential issues with cables or drums. If the garage door is crooked,
struggles to open, or causes a scraping noise, reach out to one of the experts at Aeonic Garage Doors to
evaluate the issue with a free quote.
Bearings
Bearings should be addressed during a spring replacement. Garage door bearings replacement is a necessary maintenance task that should be done periodically to keep your garage door functioning properly. These bearings are located on the hinges and rollers and are responsible for enabling smooth movement of the garage door. When bearings wear out, they can cause the door to become noisy when opening and closing, which can be annoying. Failing to replace worn bearings can also cause damage to other parts of the garage door, and may eventually lead to costly repairs.

Bearings
Any time you are replacing garage door springs, the bearings should also be addressed. Replacing these
bearings is necessary to keep the garage door working properly. Located at the hinges and rollers,
garage door bearings are what allows smooth movement – but they wear out. Worn out garage door
bearings cause a number of problems, from noisy opening and closing to damaging other parts to the
system that opens and closes your garage door.

Door Reinforcement
There is a vast array of materials that are used to manufacture a garage door. After years of entering and exiting the door, the materials that compose the door panels will fatigue causing, Bowing, sagging and in some cases cracks in the sections of the door. When this happens there is a risk of the door falling off its tracks or causing irreversible damage. Reinforcing the door with the proper parts can not only help prolong the life of the door but can be a preventative measure taken to save a scary situation that will save money in the long run.
