Why Won't My Garage Door Open?

May 6, 2025

Don't let a garage door that won't open cause headaches throughout the rest of your day.

The garage door has become the portal to the world for many families, as more and more people are using it as their main entrance to their home. Those families rely on its consistency and need it to operate properly, or their whole life may be turned upside down. No one wants to miss an important meeting or commitment, and your schedule is too jam-packed to be interrupted by inconvenience.

Even if you only use your garage door sparingly, it can cause problems if it simply won’t open. The garage door has become a bit taken for granted, as many people simply expect it to work perfectly year-in and year-out. However, there are a lot of moving parts that keep the system operating properly, and if not properly maintained, it can cause some problems. There are a number of things you can look at to find out what’s causing the issue.

Check the Opener & Main Mechanism

One of the simplest problems that can keep your garage door from opening is with the opener itself. Check the batteries in the opener or keypad, as this simple fix is sometimes all you need. However, it’s also important to check if the door will open from the mounted button inside the garage. If it still won’t open, check the main mechanism to ensure it’s plugged in and receiving power. If it sounds like the motor is running, the gear drive in the opener may need to be replaced.

Inspect Garage Door Springs & Cables

Most garage door openers rely on cables and torsion springs to lift the door. If these wear out, they can break and keep your door from opening. These springs and cables can be very dangerous, due to the tension that is needed to run the system. It’s a good idea to contact a reputable garage door repair service to take care of any broken springs or cables. They’re trained to properly replace these parts, preventing serious injury and ensuring proper installation.

Look for Obstructions or Blocked Sensors

Any obstructions along the garage door’s tracks can prevent the door from opening, as can damage to the door itself. It doesn’t take a very big object to obstruct the door, and even minor damage can impact its ability to open and close. The other item that may become obstructed and cause your garage door opener to malfunction is the sensors. These are located on either side of the door near the base of the tracks. One of those sensors sends a beam to the other, and if that line is blocked, it will prevent your door from working properly. Check to make sure the sensors are aligned and nothing is in the way that would cause it to malfunction.

There are a number of reasons that your garage door might not be opening properly. Because of the danger that comes with some of the moving parts, it might be time to contact a garage door repair service for help.
